BIOMIMETICS AND TECTONICS: A Methodology for Design Studio

Authors: Ana Rolim e Aristóteles Cantalice

Poster presented at international conference on architecture design VII Projetar 2017, Buenos Aires, Argentina

This methodology combines biomimetics and tectonics in architectural design education, drawing inspiration from nature and emphasizing cultural identity through craftsmanship. Implemented in a 3rd year architectural design studio over three semesters, it proved effective in developing complex projects even at an intermediate level of study.

The approach involves ten stages: (1) lectures on biomimetics and tectonics; (2) site visits; (3) site analysis through sketches focusing on various aspects; (4) creation of interpretative site models; (5) photographic documentation of models; (6) extraction of sections for digital modeling; (7) construction of a precise physical site model; (8) group seminars on generative design and biomorphic structures; (9) initiation of preliminary studies based on models; (10) technical workshops, pin-ups, and critiques to refine projects, including the construction of detailed 3D prototypes and structural details.
